Registered Dietitian vs Nutritionist
The titles sound similar but the credentials and scope differ a lot.
What to expect
An RD/RDN completes an accredited program, supervised practice, and a national exam. 'Nutritionist' is less regulated and varies by state.
What the evidence says
For medical nutrition therapy (diabetes, kidney disease, etc.), a registered dietitian is the credentialed standard.
Educational summary, not medical advice. Evidence evolves — discuss options with a licensed provider.
When to see a physician
Unexplained weight loss, swallowing trouble, or malnutrition signs warrant a physician and RD together.
